Born in Cali, Colombia, Andy Alvarez is a director / producer based in Vancouver, BC. She recently graduated from the University of British Columbia in 2017 with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Film Production. Andy was the Executive Producer and Cinematographer for the Award Winning Student Short Film, Vanessa, 2016 at the Montreal World Film Festival in 2016 and has produced the short film, The Good Fight, 2017, which premiered at the Vancouver International Film Festival in 2017. Her directorial debut, and UBC Thesis project, based on her personal story is the award winning short film La Mariposa, 2017 which opened the Toronto Latin American Film Festival in 2017, screened at the prestigious Chicago’s International Children’s Film Festival in 2017 and had it’s BC premiere at the Whistler Film Festival in 2017. After more than twelve world-wide festival screenings, and several awards, La Mariposa was awarded a Leo Award for Best Student Production in June of 2018. Andy has recently completed principal photography on her first short film outside of film school; OUR HOME, a story about a latin American immigrant family that’s celebrating the birthday of their youngest child, and gets rudely interrupted by two immigration officers - it’s scheduled to be completed by the fall of 2018.
Andy’s goal as a filmmaker is to make more female lead stories that provide a new perspective and empower a younger generation to reach for endless possibilities.
