Sharon McGowan is an Associate Professor teaching film production and creative writing at UBC. McGowan is a Lifetime Member of WIFTV, a past recipient of the Woman of the Year Spotlight Award, a founding board member, and a Past President of WIFTV (1989-91). She co-chairs the Advocacy and ARIA Committees. She is also the founding producer and co-chair of WIFTV’s From Our Dark Side genre film program. McGowan started her career as a documentary filmmaker for the NFB’s activist program, Challenge for Change, and the acclaimed women’s film unit, Studio D. McGowan later began producing feature films including the BC classic, The Lotus Eaters, and the lesbian romantic comedy, Better than Chocolate, which was released in over 30 countries and 300 screens in the US. McGowan’s most recent film is the documentary, Bearded Ladies: the Photography of Rosamond Norbury, which premiered at the Vancouver Queer Film Festival.
