Topic: The Basics of Reading and Understanding Your Contract
For writers and filmmakers, the idea of reading your contract option or license agreement can be the stuff of a Hitchcockian nightmare. This breakfast will focus on which key sections of a contract you absolutely need to understand, and which are typically standard boiler-plate fare. If you are lucky enough to have an agent or lawyer working on your behalf, they should always review your documents, but you shouldn't rely on them to know your intentions, or the fine-points you may have discussed over a hand-shake. After all, you are the one bound to the terms and delivery requirements of the document. We will review a standard Writer’s Option, Work-for-Hire, and other common contracts you may encounter.
Victoria Angell is a former subsidiary rights licensing manager with Simon and Schuster Children’s Publishing NYC. She specialized in licensing to the book-club and educational markets, including educational video and digital rights. She is currently a producer with Agentic Digital Media in Vancouver, BC, working on interactive online properties. Agentic focuses on websites and digital projects for social-change and non-profit organizations, TV-convergent media, and arts organizations. In her “spare” time, she writes, directs and produces sci-fi genre film projects as Armed and Ready Productions.
