About the Panellists
Asia Youngman is an award-winning Indigenous director and screenwriter based in Vancouver, Canada. Named as one of Playback’s “10 to Watch”, she is an alumna from the TIFF Filmmaker Lab, the TIFF Talent Accelerator, the Canadian Academy Directors Program for Women, the Berlinale DocSalon Toolbox Programme and the Netflix-BANFF Diversity of Voices Initiative. Asia wrote and directed the short film HATHA (2021) and her short documentary THIS INK RUNS DEEP (2019) premiered at the 44th Toronto International Film Festival. Most recently, she was the recipient of the Directors Guild of Canada BC Emerging Greenlight with her latest short film N’XAXAITKW (2022) which was nominated for five Leo Awards and will be having its world premiere at the 47th Toronto International Film Festival.
Asia’s television credits include Sinking Ship Entertainment’s ODD SQUAD MOBILE UNIT (PBS, TVO), AMPLIFY (APTN) and a television deal with Entertainment One where she is adapting a novel from New York Times best-selling author Cynthia Leitich Smith. She is currently in post-production on a feature documentary with ESPN and is slated to direct a television movie for Lifetime later this year. Asia is the owner of Visceral Village Productions which she founded in 2019. She is represented by The Gersh Agency in LA and Pacific Artists Management in Vancouver.

Laura Arboleda is a queer Colombian-Mestizo filmmaker and programmer. She holds a B.F.A. in Film Production from Simon Fraser University and is an alum of Vancouver International Film Festival’s Mentorship Program. Her previous short films have screened in festivals and venues across North America, Asia, and Europe. She continues to expand her film practice, making short documentaries and process based experimental films. Her work explores themes of shared memories and spaces. Laura is the Senior Programmer with Vancouver Short Film Festival.
