Shana Myara is the director of the radical body positivity documentary, "Well Rounded" (BFI Flare, Inside Out). She is currently developing an animated musical with composer/musician Ellen Marple, and is an award-winning writer of fiction, a former festival artistic director, and movies buyer for a cable TV network.
Edgy, hilarious, sometimes raunchy, and sometimes heartbreaking, "Well Rounded" brings fat queers to the forefront—with interviews from artists to health professionals—in this fantastic new local documentary from Shana Myara, WIFTV Member and Board Vice President (and former VQFF Artistic Director).
Systemic fatphobia has been shaped by white supremacy, nationalism, and misogyny. These same oppressive dynamics play out in queer communities everyday. Featuring hilarious, vulnerable, and insightful stories from Mi’qmaw comedian and broadcaster, Candy Palmater, interdisciplinary performer Ivory, and local queers including style icon Lydia Okello and comedian Joanne Tsung, this documentary balances the personal impacts of fatphobia with scientific insight on weight stigma from psychologist Dr. Janet Tomiyama and socio-political context from historian Dr. Jenny Ellison. "Well Rounded" is a celebration and affirmation of fat queer bodies and identities, especially for those of us who don’t often see our BIPOC, 2SLGBTQIA+, disabled and/or fat selves celebrated on screen.
“Well Rounded” is screening on VOD at VQFF August 19-21, 2021. Q&A with director Shana Myara and select cast members. More info here
