Sharon McGowan has an MFA in Film Studies and is an Associate Professor at UBC, teaching Film Production and Creative Writing. McGowan started her career writing and directing documentaries at the National Film Board and later moved into producing feature films. Her films have screened in theatres and on television around the world and have premiered at major film festivals including TIFF and Berlin.
McGowan is a founding member of WIFTV and the current Co-Chair of the Advocacy Committee, lobbying for gender equity and inclusivity at all levels of Canada’s film and television. McGowan also founded the national From Our Dark Side genre film incubator program now entering its fifth year.
Susan has over three decades of senior level management and consulting experience in film and television policy and industry analysis in Canada, and holds a Bachelor of Commerce (Honours) degree and a Master of Arts degree from the School of Communication at Simon Fraser University, Vancouver.
An early Board member of Women in Film + TV Vancouver (WIFTV), Susan has been a leader in many of its recent advocacy initiatives as Co-Chair of the Advocacy Committee. She is also a founding organizer of WIFT Canada and Treasurer of the board of directors of Women in Film and TV International (WIFTI). Additionally, Susan is a member of the Women in Production Steering Committee for the federal broadcasting regulator, the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications (CRTC).
