Deepa Mehta, Ontario

In 2012, a young woman was gang-raped by six men inside a moving bus in New Delhi. Later she died from the injuries endured.  In Deepa Mehta’s latest film, eleven actors collaborate on a fictional dramatization of the lives of the rapists. She omits the brutal rape itself but rather challenges the actors to explore the backstories of the characters involved. The film interrogates the mentality that fuels male entitlement over women and their bodies and examines the circumstances that enable them.

Material in this film may cause some views distress.

Credits: Director: Deepa Mehta; Producer: David C Hamilton; Cinematographer: Maithili Venkataraman; Editor: Darby Maclnnis; Lead Actors and Writers: Vansh Bhardwaj, Tia Bhatia, Janki Bishtas, Seema Biswas, Mukti Das, Suman Jhaas, Ramanjit Kaur, Debina Rakshit, Mahesh Saini, Jagjeet Sandhu, Zorawar Shukla, Davinder Singh

From its first images, elemental and disorienting, we are led into a world both familiar and startling. The broken and uncertain triad of the nuclear family is seen through the eyes of seven year old Luca, who chooses to cast a protective bubble over her bumbling, if loving, father. Hoping to fix up a property for sale, the family returns to the Greek Island of Santoroni, where mother and father reignite their passion. Suddenly the young girl faces an emotional environment now much changed. This film elegantly crosses and recrosses the line between realism and myth, in a work that grows out of the unspoken desires and assumptions of all three characters.
